Bermuda Backyard Event Expects Growth In Second Year

The second edition of Run Bermuda’s Backyard, sponsored by Monument Re, will take place on 2nd December at Clearwater Beach field, Southside, St. David’s.

The first Run Bermuda’s

Backyard in 2022 exceeded the race organisers’ expectations, raising $10,000 for Raleigh Bermuda’s youth life skills programs.

The event will again be raising funds for Raleigh Bermuda. Thanks to support from title sponsor Monument Re, all entry fees will be donated to the charity and anyone wishing to make a donation can do so through the “donation” button on the sign-up website:

Backyard Runs are a relatively new race format in which runners are to complete a 4.167 mile (6,706 meters) loop (or “Yard”) every hour on the hour. Most participants aim to set their own personal best number of Yards or distance, while seasoned ultra-runners will vie to be the last person standing. All runners start together each hour on the hour and continue until they fail to complete a Yard in the allotted hour or voluntarily withdraw. Well-known local runner Fabri Alvera set the initial Bermuda Backyard record in the 2022 event, completing 25 Yards, the equivalent of 104 miles, with Jason Williams claiming the “assist”, reaching the 24-hour and 100-mile threshold. Those achieving distance milestones are also celebrated on the Bermuda Backyard website: www.bermudabackyard.com.

Race Organisers said “The feedback from those experiencing the Backyard race format last year, whether they ran one Loop, 25 Loops, or somewhere in between, was very positive. We believe the event’s supportive atmosphere, camaraderie, and beautiful route will see it grow significantly this year.”

Individual participants will also be able to sign up for a corporate team as the Race Organisers look to introduce a team category to the event this year.

Race Coordinator Andy McComb stated “we want to continually develop this event to make it interesting and enjoyable for runners of all abilities, as well as providing local ultra runners with the opportunity to show their talents on home soil and qualify for team and individual world championships. By introducing a corporate team event we are providing an extension of the workplace for colleagues to come together and support each other in achieving a new running milestone while raising funds for a worthy cause.”

Entries for the 2023 Run Bermuda’s Backyard are limited to 150 participants and sign-up will close on 18th November. You can sign up at
